Dickinson was born in Port Ontario (N.Y.) in 1842. Ten years later his family moved to Mich. He married Frances Platt in 1869. A lawyer of some reknown, Dickinson was a powerful figure in the State Democratic Party. He was appointed Postmaster General during Grover Cleveland's first administration.
